What is stress?

Stress is not floating around in the air. It’s your body’s internal response to a perceived threat to your well-being.

Stress is not floating around in the air.  It’s your body’s physical response to a perceived threat to your well-being.

  •  Regardless of whether this ‘threat’ requires a physical or thoughtful response, your body automatically prepares to defend itself.

  • This primal reaction is a physical one and is often referred to as the ‘fight or flight’ response.

These physiological responses were crucial to our ancestors’ survival in the wild and they are still useful to us on rare occasions today.  More frequently, however, they now represent an overreaction to modern challenges that often don’t require a physical response at all.

What the ‘threats’ of today lack in physical danger to our bodies they make up for in sheer diversity and quantity. As a result we can find ourselves in a more or less constant state of ‘red alert’.

In this state our bodies are not operating efficiently.  You see, the stress response holds a kill switch for many of the essential processes that keep us healthy and well balanced. A stressed body has little time to attend to the critical functions of rest, repair and regeneration.


Why is stress an issue?

While it’s sometimes nice to feel like a part of the crowd, it’s unlikely you’d choose to simply stick your head in the sand. In fact, if you are reading this we can already tell that you’re no ostrich!

It’s not a stretch to consider stress as a health issue of epidemic proportion.

The American Psychological Association recently reported that seven out of ten people surveyed viewed stress to have a significant impact on their physical health. That’s more than two thirds of ALL respondents. In fact, a significant majority reported their stress levels to be rising while one in five people classed their stress levels as extreme.2 This is not just an American problem.

Some of the symptoms of stress that are most often reported worldwide are illustrated in the diagram above.
These are all symptoms of a body living in a subconscious state of red alert, and are just the tip of a concerning iceberg.

Spending too much time in this state can seriously compromise your health, vitality and well-being.

How can you address stress?

Calm your mind, relax your body and powerful things can happen.

When in a state of calm, the mind suspends its ‘red alert’ broadcast.  In this state the body will switch its attention from ‘punching at shadows’ to the crucial functions of repair, re-balance and regeneration.

When you are in a calm state, the stress response and its symptoms retreat to the sidelines.

In today’s world it’s quite simply not practical to remove all the potential sources of your stress.  However, it is possible to teach yourself how to gain a better control and understanding of your stress response, regardless of its source.

Learning how to relax, calm the mind and settle the body is a valuable life skill and a critical part of understanding ‘How to Address Stress’.

Additionally, being able to identify the issues and environments that cause us to mentally misdiagnose common challenges as physical threats is a key cornerstone of successful stress management.
